Addiction in the Military: Understanding the Challenges and Finding Support

Serving in the military comes with unique challenges and for some veterans and active-duty service members, it also comes with a hidden battle: addiction. The lasting impact of trauma, stress, and reintegration into civilian life can significantly increase the risk of substance use disorders.
The connection between military service and substance misuse is well documented. Stress from deployments, exposure to combat, and service-related injuries often leads to increased reliance on alcohol or prescription medications. Over time, these coping mechanisms can develop into substance use disorders.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:
- More than 1 in 10 veterans are diagnosed with a substance use disorder (SUD).
- Up to 30% of veterans with PTSD also have a co-occurring SUD.
- Alcohol remains the most misused substance among veterans.
These challenges are often compounded by physical pain, mental health issues, and barriers to care.

Stigma and Other Barriers to Treatment
Despite the need for care, many veterans delay or avoid treatment due to stigma, shame, or fear of judgment. Some worry that seeking help could damage their reputation, career, or relationships. Others simply don’t know where to start.
Common barriers include:
- Stigma around addiction and mental health in military culture
- Limited access to timely care
- Unaddressed trauma, especially PTSD and injury
- Difficulty transitioning to civilian life and support systems
At Valley Hope, we work to break down these barriers by providing accessible, comprehensive care for those who’ve served. Explore our Veterans Treatment Program, designed to address both addiction and the root causes behind it.
Recognizing the Signs of Addiction in Veterans
Addiction doesn’t always look the same, and it doesn’t discriminate by rank, branch, or years of service. Common signs include:
- Increased alcohol or drug use
- Using substances to manage anxiety, sleep issues, or trauma
- Isolation from family, friends, or military peers
- Difficulty holding a job or adjusting to civilian life
- Symptoms of PTSD or depression
