National Recovery Month: Real Stories of Addiction Recovery

Each September, National Recovery Month shines a light on the millions of people living in recovery and the power of treatment to transform lives. For Valley Hope, it’s more than a recognition, it’s a celebration of our Alumni, their courage, and the inspiring ways they are building meaningful lives beyond addiction.
Voices of Hope highlights real stories of addiction recovery from Valley Hope alumni. These voices show the world that recovery is not only possible, but beautiful, purposeful, and lasting. Collectively, they humanize recovery, reduce stigma, and inspire hope in those currently struggling with substance use disorders, their loved ones, and communities.
As Carlos, one Alumnus, shared:
“Life now is so beautiful. I learned how to cherish life. I never knew about being of service and what comes back from doing something from the bottom of my heart. It is a great feeling.”
Voices of Hope: Real Recovery Stories
Sobriety success isn’t just about stopping substance use, it’s about rebuilding life, rediscovering passions, and creating new opportunities. Valley Hope Alumni reflect on how recovery has helped them pursue and achieve dreams beyond their SUD journey:
- Georgia G.: “Since finding recovery, I’ve taught myself how to sew, started playing the ukulele, and even launched travel social media accounts. But the highlight has been reconnecting with my alma mater — I hosted an alumni event for more than 100 people and felt truly part of a community again.”
- Jim E.: “I lost 50 pounds by staying active and eating right. Then I found joy in giving back, volunteering in my community. And I even discovered scuba diving — something I never thought I’d do. Recovery gave me the courage to try.”
- Gloria R.: “My passion for books became an opportunity to give back. For two years, I’ve volunteered to read for people with visual impairments. It’s given me purpose and joy I never expected.”
- Angela Y.: “I started woodworking, grew a small business, became a foster parent, and ultimately adopted a child. My biggest joy is being present and capable. Sobriety gave me that gift.”
- Another alumnus: “Sobriety has given me freedom. I can show up for my kids, I can be a husband, and I can live without shame. That’s success for me.”
These recovery stories remind us that addiction treatment isn’t the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new life filled with possibility, purpose and joy.

Connection and Community: The Heart of Recovery
Recovery is sustained through community, and Valley Hope’s alumni programs help keep that connection alive. Whether through support groups and reunions, service opportunities, or simply staying connected, alumni lean on one another to keep recovery strong.
One alumnus described it best:
“I thought treatment would end and I’d be on my own. But the alumni network showed me I never have to do this alone. I have a family in recovery that lifts me up.”
Valley Hope’s Commitment to Lifelong Healing
Since 1967, Valley Hope has guided more than 350,000 people into recovery. With compassionate, evidence-based treatment services, our mission goes beyond treatment, it’s about equipping people and families to build abundant lives in sobriety.
Our Alumni stories prove what science already shows: treatment works, and recovery is real. Every September, and every day in between, we celebrate the courage of those who choose healing.
