Rudi B.’s Story

When is your sobriety birthday?

October 1, 2023

How has recovery influenced the person you are today?

I took my recovery very seriously, and went to Florida to escape home town triggers. I resigned my Middle School teaching position, and a 28 year career in order to be successful in my recovery. I ended up having a very rewarding teaching career in Florida, and was blessed with my wife and soulmate as well. I retired from teaching in 2016, and started to make plans to return to Colorado to be close to my children and grandchildren. We moved to Parker Colorado in 2022, and in July of 2024 I applied for the maintenance position here at Parker Valley Hope. I have come full circle, and so appreciate my position here. I share my story with patients and they all say my story is an inspiration for them. I also am fulfilled, as I again like teaching, feel as though I make a difference.

What’s something meaningful you’ve started doing since getting sober that brings you joy or purpose?

I have always been a fine artist since graduating from Art school. There was a new found joy that was visible through my art. I continue to express myself through my art and sometimes find the time to draw recovery themes for patients here.

What goals have you achieved or are working toward because of your recovery?

I believe the most important thing was gaining back all the things lost in relationships that addiction strips away. I can truthfully say that I took the time to rebuild trust, respect, and love that was lost between myself and my children. Today we are closer than we have ever been. This summer for my 70th birthday my son, daughter and myself spent 5 days in the Pacific North West together. It was like a bucket list trip!

Is there a passion or talent you have pursued in recovery?

I continue to exhibit my art. I have reestablished many friendships that 22 years in Florida had strained.
