NORTON, Kan.—Valley Hope Association President and CEO Pat George released the following statement today in response to President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national public health emergency in response to the growing opioid crisis in the United States:
“I applaud President Trump for taking this needed step to help address a critical problem in response to the growing opioid epidemic in the United States. Here in the heartland of America, we are witnessing firsthand the devastating effects of both prescription and illicit opioids.
“Since 2007, the number of patients admitted to Valley Hope for treatment from opioids more than doubled. In the 18- to 25-age range, the addiction rates dramatically increased from almost 30 percent to more than 51 percent. The trend will only worsen without a coordinated response from all levels of government and the medical community, including addiction treatment providers like Valley Hope.
“Valley Hope has seen its share of epidemics in its 50-year history. From alcohol in the ‘60s, to cocaine in the ‘80s to meth in the ‘90s and 2000s, we stand ready to work with the Trump administration and all stakeholders to solve this crisis.”
